The LiDAR Saving Lives Public Safety Coalition (LSL) is proud to serve as the official Project Management Organization (PMO) and National Education Lead for KARMA Automotive’s pioneering crash-to-care initiative—an industry-first integration of real-time airbag-triggered alerts, AI-assisted crash scene data, and Drone-as-a-First Responder (DFR) deployment into the Next-Generation 9-1-1 (NG911) ecosystem.
Every second counts after a crash. Traditional emergency response depends on human witnesses and delayed telematics relays, costing precious minutes—and lives. Our mission is to eliminate that delay by leading a national transformation from analog response systems to automated, IP-based crash detection and response infrastructure.
In collaboration with the University of California, Riverside (UCR) and the City of Riverside, LSL is managing the implementation of a private/public funded Demonstration Project titled: “Improving Post-Crash Care with Real-Time Data Driven 9-1-1 Response.”
Our prototype system architecture revolutionizes post-crash care by automating the full emergency response chain:
• Airbag Deployment Automation Platform (ADAP): Instantly detects crash severity and location, transmitting alerts to 9-1-1 within 2–3 seconds.
• NG911-Compliant IP Routing: Structured crash data is securely transmitted to PSAPs, trauma centers, and Real-Time Crime Centers (RTCCs) using NENA i3 standards.
• Drone-as-a-First Responder (DFR): Autonomous drones are dispatched with live-stream video and audio feeds, providing real-time situational awareness before EMS even arrives.
With KARMA Automotive as the flagship automotive OEM partner, the project follows a phased deployment model:
1. Phase 1 – Simulation & Lab Integration: Validating real-time crash alerts and system logic.
2. Phase 2 – Controlled Field Deployment: Real-world testing with KARMA vehicles and municipal fleet integration.
3. Phase 3 – Citywide Demonstration: Public safety operations in Riverside to test emergency response performance improvements.
By reducing the time from airbag deployment to 9-1-1 awareness by up to 80%, we enable:
